Gospel Icon Discovery uplifts local unsigned gospel singers
The 7th annual Gospel Icon Discovery took place at the Durban International Convention Centre on Sunday.
The 20 carefully selected singing hopefuls who came from all over eThekwini made their way to the stage amongst industry giants like Dumi Mkokstad and Thinah Zungu.
“Gospel ID is aimed at tapping into the unsigned gospel talent in our beautiful city and aims to shine the spotlight on that talent for bigger opportunities. Though ultimately theirs is one winner, the opportunity to network and be discovered is great, we can only hope that our finalists use the opportunity as a springboard to propel their careers in the gospel music industry,” shared head of Parks and Recreation Thembinkosi Ngcobo.
The winners of the group category Abadumisi Bevangeli said “It’s all very brand new and fresh, but we thank God for the opportunity and cannot wait to make our city proud.”
The group walked away with a whopping R65 000 cash prize and a recording deal worth R35 000 with Universal Studios. While the kiddies under 14 saw first place winner, Philasande Nhlangulela takes home R10 000 and 2nd and 3rd runner up taking home R5000 each and the opportunity to continue to perform at events so their talents can be harnessed and they can be exposed to the industry ins and outs.
“It is God’s grace and gift that got me here and I am forever thankful to umdali (the creator), Impela amaphupho ayafezeka (indeed dreams come true), ” shared solo artist winner Zandile Thilela who won a mega R65 000 cash prize, a recording deal with Universal Studios and an international distribution and marketing deal.
