Fancy hats, peplums, three piece suits, heels, dresses- no it’s not a fashion show, it’s a church service.
Church services are a place where we praise God but they have also become a platform for many to show off their great fashion sense.
From a young age we all had our Sunday best; certain clothes were preserved just for church.
Some churches are even famous for having the most fashionable congregation or pastor’s wife. “Just like men show off their cars at church, women also show off their clothing at church and I also enjoy dressing up for church,” said Nkonzo Xulu.
Social media is bombarded with feeds and posts on what people are styling to church:
“I dress just to have my body covered but I don’t dress up to be fashionable, I don’t see the need to put on my best, I wear whatever I have”- Nano Ngwane.
“I wear anything but I still want to look good, but I realised there is a lot division in the church used to attend, they used to tease those that were not fashionable or trendy”- Nduduzo Ndaba.
Nomfundo Fooh Mzimela said, “What I wear in church matters, I get all dolled up for my God.”
“There is a huge and good relationship with how we conduct ourselves in terms of clothing as Christians at church,” said Cornelius Booi.
Mhlengi Mafu said, “It shouldn’t matter what you wear when you are in the presence of the Lord and one can wear anything that makes them be presentable.”
“But times have changed- everything is fashion. There are different shows like Fashion meets Gospel- those are other ways to attract the youth off which that’s a smart way,” Mafu added
“Many agree that the focus has shifted a bit- people have forgotten who they should impress- it has become about the people not God, but also feel dress code is a very important aspect of church,” Ndaba said.
