The Drama theatre at The Playhouse was pouring with fans who came to see the Dance Africa Dance Festival on Saturday.
Sifiso Mthethwa was happy as he greeted and welcomed people who came to witness his experienced dancers and musicians’ challenging dance moves and songs from all over the African continent.
“Dance Africa Dance is a concept that was founded probably like 16 years ago,” added Mthethwa, owner of Vision Faces, creative director and producer of Dance Africa Dance.
Mthethwa’s years of travelling overseas while acquiring international knowledge and accomplishing his theatre studies were never in vain.
When he lived in Downtown Manhattan, in New York, he would see African dance studios and that is where he thought of the idea of how all Africans can celebrate Africanism.
Exactly seven African countries are combined in Dance Africa Dance and their difference dance moves, sequences and music genres.
“Dance Africa Dance is about the celebration of African through music, dance and telling African stories. So here we have a combination of seven countries which is Congo, Nigeria, Cameroon, South Africa, Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya,” said Mthethwa.
Mthethwa said Dance Africa Dance combines all these cultures because they believe it as a way to fight against xenophobia. They also want to promote African unity and dance is another way of using African cultures to promote African unity.
