Glenwood LGBTQI+ Community frustrated with bars homophobic & transphobic behaviour
The LGBTQI+ community has voiced out their frustrations over what they call a case of ‘gross homophobia and transphobia’ at Berlin Bar, a pub in Davenport, a suburb of Durban.
A petition is currently making rounds on various social media platforms, following accusations of multiple discriminatory incidents directed at members of the LGBTQI+ community at the pub.
The LGBTQI+ community is accusing bouncers and the pub’s management of displaying homophobic and transphobic behavior towards its queer patrons, the community accuses the bouncers of kicking out every queer person who is dressed in shorts, heels and or ripped jeans among other items of clothing.
Berlin patron, Amile Nxele said that she felt stripped of off her dignity when she was dragged out of the bar in the middle of the night, just because she is a transgender woman.
“The bouncer said that I am not allowed inside, because I am a man dressed as a woman,” said Nxele.
She said efforts to refer the matter to the pub’s manager were in vain, because the bouncers, speaking on behalf the manager, said that the manager could not contribute to the conversation around Nxele’s incident because he had not been on duty on the night in question.
Nxele said that after being kicked out of Berlin, she tried going to a neighboring bar, however the same bouncer instructed the bar to prohibit entry and not let her in, because she was a man dressed in women’s clothing.
“I told my friends I would try the bar next door; I tried going there and then the very same man went ahead and told the bouncer next door, that they must not let me in,” she added.
When asked what she is hoping to achieve with this petition, Nxele boldly said, “We want change, they need to teach their bouncers to respect us.”
Nxele is not the only patron complaining of ill-treatment at the pub, another queer person shared how he was kicked out in the streets for wearing shorts.
“I was manhandled and escorted out the premises by the two bouncers in the middle of the night, only because I was wearing shorts, not to mention how one of the managers verbally abused and ridiculed me after I tried being civil with him, I’m beyond dismayed,” he said.
Shedding light on what the community hopes to achieves with the petition, a member of the LGBTQI+ community, Sibusiso Ferror said that the management of the pub needed to take responsibility for their ignorance.
“The management at this establishment, must change their ways and run an actual business, not a homophobic drinking stop,” said Ferror.
Following mounting calls for the establishment to account, Berlin Bar management has since issued a statement condemning the alleged acts of discrimination against the LGBTQI+ community.
“The management takes these allegations very seriously and strongly condemns such behaviour, as it has no place in our establishment or anywhere in society,” said the statement.
