The Vodacom Bulls sealed their top position in the South African Conference by defeating Toyota Cheetahs 30-25 at the Free State Stadium on Saturday night.
Bulls, who remain unbeaten on their six consecutive games, didn’t spoil their clean record against the Bloemfontein side.
The intense game started on a high note as JJ Engelbrecht scored a try for the visitors on the fourth minute but was denied by the referee. Bulls showed their intent early when Werner Kruger scored the first try of the game on the eighth minute. Fly-half Morne Steyn aced the conversion to put the visitors ahead by seven points.
Enthusiastic Cheetahs equalized through their winger and fly-half, Willie le Roux and Riaan Smit, from who came a brilliant try and conversion respectively.
Just before the 20 minutes mark, Bulls plotted a good attack from lineout. Their flank Deon Stegman scored a try and Steyn converted to put them on lead of 14-7. Bulls’ fullback Lionel Mapoe was replaced by Zane Kirchner after sustaining an injury.
The home side made an effort to come back as they were given a penalty and Smit aced it to add 3 points on the board.
The Bulls seemed to be untouchable after their center Jan Serfontein made a good break and scored and Steyn converted to place the score on 30-13 in favour of the visitors.
As the temper game was reaching the roof, Cheetahs who were running out of time, became more dangerous and managed to get two tries through Riaan Smit and Trevor Nyakane.
Smit only managed to convert one and it did not help the home side as there was no time to cover the deficit.
