Durban’s famous Moses Mabhida Stadium will be the alternative home ground for three of Kaizer Chiefs’ fixtures in the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season.
The stadium has a current capacity of 54 000 and was used by local Premier Soccer League outfit Golden Arrows in last season’s campaign. According to Motaung, the venue met the necessary criteria for Amakhosi.
“We are excited to announce Moses Mabhida as our alternate home venue for this upcoming season,” confirmed Jessica Motaung, Kaizer Chiefs’ marketing director.
“The stadium and the partnership details ticked the boxes, from brand association to the logistics checklist and beyond,” said Motaung.
The Soweto giants used the Cape Town stadium as their alternative home base in the 2015/16 season, but Motaung insists that the club is elated by the change.
“We are delighted to now give Durban a chance to host the three selected home games. We have always commanded tremendous support in the province of KwaZulu-Natal,” added Motaung.
Given the strong fan base which Amakhosi commands in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Motaung promised that work is underway for fans to experience a remarkable occasion.
“Behind the scenes, work is already fully underway to make these three games a success. We plan to give the supporters their utmost Gold & Black experience,” concluded Motaung.
Vusi Mazibuko, the General Manager of Moses Mabhida Stadium, also confirmed the news.
“We are delighted to bring Kaizer Chiefs back to the city of Durban and our stadium where the club has previously hosted their CAF Champions League qualifiers,” said Mazibuko.
He went on to highlight Chiefs’ success in Durban and welcomed the announcement.
“Historically, Moses Mabhida stadium has been a good hunting grounds for Amakhosi and we look forward to more thrills and action on the pitch this season as the club’s home away from home,” added Mazibuko
Amakhosi will play host to three opposition, in the domestic league, at Moses Mabhida. Starting with Ajax Cape Town on the 15th of October, before hosting Baroka FC on the 2nd of November, and concluding with newly promoted Highlands Park FC on the 18th of February 2017.
