eThekwini Municipality set to host the COSAFA games for the next 3-years.
The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) has signed a contract with the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) provincial government and eThekwini Municipality to host several COSAFA games for the next 3-years.
The agreement runs from August 2021 to December 2023. The COSAFA games that will be hosted in KZN include, the COSAFA Women Championship League Qualifier, Cosafa Cup and Soccer Beach Tournament. The team that wins in the COSAFA Championship League Qualifier, will get a trophy and also a ticket to go and represent the COSAFA region in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women Champions League in Egypt later this year.
Speaking at the inaugural event held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, KwaZulu-Natal(KZN) Head of Department in Sport and Recreation, Dr. Thobile Sifunda said the hosting of COSAFA tournament will create a lot of job opportunities in Durban.
The chairman of the organising committee for the COSAFA competition, Mr. Timothy Shongwe, said he hopes the partnership with eThekwini Municipality is going to build investors confidence.
“We have worked exceptionally hard to put this partnership together, and we are also delighted with the outcome as it gives these events ( COSAFA Women’s Championship League, Cosafa Cup and Soccer Beach Tournament) a fixed home for the next 3-years, which gives both the COSAFA , and potential investors that the tournament will be of the highest quality,” said Shongwe.

The South African Women’s Football League, that was founded in 2009 has started gaining momentum, they have recently found new sponsorship league, Hollywood bet, which proffered R17 million this season. This new partnership has subsequently resulted in the change of leagues name to the “Hollywoodbet Super League.”
The Chief Whip of eThekwini Municipality, Sbongiseni Mkhize, said as the KZN province they intend to build more women’s teams that will participate in the Hollywoodbet League, COSAFA Women’s League Qualifier, and CAF Champion’s League.
