The Swedish based midfielder, May Mahlangu will miss out the next three games for Bafana Bafana due to Achilles tendon injury.
The 24-year-old suffered Achilles tendon at his club’s training session on Sunday. The Bafana playmaker will undergo an operation on Wednesday and is expected to be out of action for up to four months. And with 15 matches to go before the end of the season, the injury might keep the Helsingborg midfielder out of the pitch for the whole season.
Mahlangu is sad that he will not take part in Bafana’s upcoming crucial matches as they will play two matches in August and a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier in September.
“It is always an honour for any player to play for their country, and the same goes for me. I would have loved to be there to represent my country but circumstances alter cases. I have great confidence, however, that whoever is selected will do a good job,” Mahlangu said on Kickoff website.
“But it will be sad watching from the sidelines knowing you cannot help your teammates, because at the end of the day we all want to see our country do well. The guys have my full support. What is important for me now is to focus on my recovery process.”
Gordon Igesund’s men will play against Nigeria on August 14 in Durban for the Nelson Mandela Challenge. They will also participate in the Nelson Mandela Sports and Culture Day against Burkina Faso in August 17 at the Soccer City Stadium as well as the crucial 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Botswana in September.
“For me it is always terrible when a Bafana player gets injured and is not available for selection. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope he is back in action soon,” Igesund said.
The injury came at the bad time as there were possible moves for the youngster to one of the big leagues linked with Turkey, France and England clubs when his contract with the Swedish side ends in December.
