Maradona’s footballing influence will live on
Legendary footballer Diego Maradona died at the age of 60 after suffering a heart attack last week. The Argentinian footballer and Pelé were joint winners of FIFA Player of the Century Award. According to many great players such as Lionel Messi, Maradona had a great influence on their careers as footballers.
In an interview, Messi said: “When I was growing up, Maradona had just returned to Argentina after a spell with Sevilla. He returned to Newell’s (his boyhood club) in 1993, and he was able to take Argentina to another World Cup after a playoff. I could say without a doubt that, if someone inspired me to become a footballer, it was him. I will keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”
Legendary England forward Gary Lineker paid tribute to Maradona and the great passion the Argentine had for football.
Lineker went on to state that the Argentinian was simply an incredible footballer.
Host of Beyond The Game on Lotus FM, Byron David believes that Maradona’s legacy will live on and that without Maradona we may not have been able to see players such as Messi.
“Maradona may have physically left us, but his legacy will remain for years to come. He did change the face of football and is undoubtedly the best to have played the game. Napoli have only won trophies when he was there, that demonstrates the greatness of the man. While it’s sad that we didn’t have the chance to see him in his peak, I think Messi comes close and we’ve had that privilege. Maradona had fun while playing the game which is what a lot of current players forget to do. They get lost in tactics and everything happening behind the scenes that they forget the reason they started playing the game. He has left an indelible mark on football and the world”, said David.
Thinabantu Shozi, former Durban based footballer in the SAB League believes that Maradona did influence the modern game positively.
