New Zealand crowned Netball World Cup champions
New Zealand defeated old rivals Australia in a thrilling match in the Netball World Cup final in Liverpool, England.
The Silver Ferns were crowned 2019 Champions after they beat the reigning champions, Australia, 52-51 in high-tension match. New Zealand were simply too good for the world’s No 1 team Australia. The Silver Ferns held on in the dying minutes to win their first title over Australia since 2003.
New Zwealand coach Noeline Taurua said, “I don’t actually know what to say I’m very overwhelmed and really haven’t got the word to express the feeling at the moment, it was a big game for us and winning a gold is massive”.
This was a big win for New Zealand after shocking the netball world by missing a medal at the Commonwealth Games last year.
Katrina Rore of New Zealand said, “The ups and downs but this is sport character building I’ll take this into my life and hopefully people can be inspired about this too, when you get knocked down you come back up”.
The Silver Ferns opened the 3 goal gap going to half time after both teams netted 10 goals in the first quarter.
Ameliaranne Ekenasio netted 17/18 of her shots and Maria Folau 24/30 in the third quarter and New Zealand increased the gap to four points and the score line was 41-37 going to the final quarter.
An Australian comeback was always on the cards, but this time the Ferns stood firm when it mattered most. There were able to hold onto the ball and count down the final seconds and they captured netball’s biggest prize with one goal margin.
In other matches, hosts England won the Bronze after beating South Africa 58-42 in the third and fourth play-off match.
