South African football’s perennial bad boy Jabu Mahlangu is back on the pitch after signing a three-month contract with SuperSport United yesterday.
Mahlangu – once known as “Jabu Pule” – has been training with the club since the start of the year. Strong performances with the reserve team led to him being signed until the end of the season.
According to a statement released by SuperSport on Tuesday, Mahlangu will be available for selection immediately – and could make his first appearance against Platinum Stars in an Absa Premier League fixture.
Mahlangu thanked the club for the decision to give him an opportunity to give him another chance.
“It something I’m excited about and now it has finally happened, I’m very lucky because I got a second chance,” he said.
Although it’s a short-term contract, Mahlangu believes that it is enough time to show his commitment and dedication.
“I will do everything to help the club in the last stretch of the league and cup. It may be a short-term contract… but I’ll be assuming other roles in the longer term with United,” added Mahlangu.
Coach Cavin Johnson said Mahlangu could offer the clue a lot – both now and in the future.
“This is a an exciting day for the club because he is a talented player and he can fast track our young players in terms of vision. He can turn tight games into points for us, helping with a strong finish to the season,” said Johnson.
