Unemployed graduate starts his own business
Civil engineering graduate has started his own business in Umlazi, F section due to the high unemployment rate in the country.
Sithabiso Mthethwa, a Mangosuthu University of Technology graduate is the owner of SM Bricks. He said it has been 2 years since he graduated and he has been facing difficulties getting a permanent job.
“I decided to study civil engineering because I knew that one day I will open my own business. I did not plan to start the business this year but due to unemployment I had to start it,” said Mthethwa.
He added that after graduation he was only able to get piece jobs that did not pay him well.
“Even though I have a diploma, I accepted any small jobs because I could not get civil engineering job offers,” said Mthethwa.
Sithabiso said he has created jobs for 4 other unemployed graduates from his community and plans to employ more people in the future.
Thuthuka Cele, an employee said that he has a Nated 6 engineering certificate and has been unemployed for 1 year. He added that the company manufacturers and sells maxi bricks, stock bricks and block six-inch bricks.
“The company operates from Monday to Friday and makes deliveries to clients in any area at a reasonable price,” said Cele.
Sithabiso said that more young people to get into entrepreneurship in the country.
“Young people should be educated about the importance of starting their own businesses as there is a high rate of unemployment in South Africa,” said Mthethwa.
